FAQ: Shielding and Measurement Issues

   _________________________________ BACK TO FAQ INDEX

Q: Can I measure radiation from a “smart” meter myself?

Yes, you can purchase a meter for relatively low cost and learn how to read it yourself. There are several consumer devices on the market that measure the radiation that “smart” meters emit. For most people, we recommend the Cornet ED88T Plus Tri-mode Electrosmog Meter as an entry-level, versatile, and portable meter that measures Radiofrequency, as well as Low Frequency Magnetic and Electric Fields. With the 10,000/ second RF sampling rate on this meter, you can capture even brief smart meter pulses. If you are a US resident, the best (and most affordable) place to buy this meter is in our Stop Smart Meters! Online Store. We also sell higher-end meters like the Safe and Sound Pro 2, and Low Frequency Magnetic and Electric Field meters like the EMFields PF5. All meters include free shipping and one-on-one support, and proceeds benefit our outreach efforts.

Which meter is right for you? The general rule is get the best meter you can afford. For most people, Cornet meters provide sufficient information to make a good assessment of where problem areas are and assist you in eliminating/ mitigating them. However, if you are extremely sensitive to EMF’s, and are attempting to achieve levels down to “no concern” levels on the Building Biology Guidelines for Sleeping Areas you may want to consider obtaining a meter such as the Safe and Sound Pro 2 and the EFields PF5 meter, both available from our store. Whatever meter you choose or wherever you choose to buy it, we do urge you to get a hold of one. We have heard again and again from people that the insights that these meters provide into one’s electromagnetic environment can lead to significant changes in your family’s exposure levels.

One of the issues with ‘smart’ meters is that they have extremely short spikes of RF—usually just 2-3 milliseconds (2/1000th of a second). While your utility would have this sound harmless, it seems clear from the number of health complaints that the human nervous system has no trouble registering a signal that is that brief. In fact the electrical signals throughout our body go off in similarly brief periods of time. Some measuring devices built to measure conventional fields of RF may not have a “sampling rate” sufficient to pick up the extremely brief individual pulses. The RF meters we sell- including Cornet meters – have a sampling rate that enables them to accurately gauge smart meter radiation.

Most electric “smart” meters are in the 800-1000 MHz (megahertz) range of the radio-frequency microwave band. Gas meters can be in the 400-500 MHz range, and in-home appliance networks (HAN) (including the 2nd radio in the ‘smart’ meter) are in the 2.4-2.5 GHz (gigahertz) range. The Cornet ED88T Plus measures 100 MHz – 8 GHz.

Q: Can I shield my living space from the RF radiation from my “smart” meter?

It is possible to shield against smart meter radiation, but in order to assess the results, you need an RF meter (see above).

The idea of shielding is to place a RF barrier between you and the source of the RF. Several materials block RF radiation. Here is a basic explanation of how shielding can be set up: http://www.lessemf.com/faq-shie.html#smart. (Stop Smart Meters! does not necessarily endorse all products on this website, but this is useful information.)

Aluminum foil, especially the heavy-duty type, in two layers, overlapping, can block a good deal of RF (shiny side toward the source of the RF). Aluminum mesh screening from a hardware store can effectively shield RF as well. Here is a video demonstrating this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xJzBeUeXb0Q

However, we would like to make clear that shielding can produce unwanted or unexpected problems. Shielding without being able to measure the resulting effectiveness is not recommended. Shielding in the presence of multiple sources of RF is not recommended—a shield against one RF source can act to reflect and intensify the RF from another source. Some people harmed by “smart” meter installations have not found relief with shielding. So we recommend trying it with important several caveats:

–If your “smart” meter has made you sick, first disconnect all other wireless devices, wifi, cordless phones, microwaves, fluorescent light bulbs, etc. then (if there is absolutely no way to have the smart meter removed) shield with care, and pay close attention to how the change makes you feel.

–Get help doing it, because if you are sensitive, you do not want to be standing directly in front of the meter for any period of time.

–Consider hiring an EMF consultant to aid you in your plans.

–Buy an RF meter to measure the radiation in your environment, so you can shield in the right places and measure the results.

–Try several things before you give up.

–Make sure other sources of RF in your environment are removed or relocated, such as cordless phones or WiFi.

We don’t recommend wrapping the meter in foil, as this may cause the meter to increase power to the transmitter, as it attempts to connect repeatedly. We say this after receiving several anecdotal reports to this effect, and so although we can’t explain how or why this happens, we can say that some people have felt worse around a wrapped meter.

Products like the “smart meter guard” or any other type of smart meter shielding, are never a replacement for getting an analog meter re-installed. Such products do nothing to reduce dirty electricity, privacy violations, fire risk, or other documented smart meter problems.  They can reduce the direct RF radiation (not transmitted by wiring) by 98% according to our measurements, so for travel or temporary purposes, or in areas where there is absolutely zero possibility of getting an analog replaced, these products may be useful at reducing RF exposure — but buyer beware. A number of dubious claims are being made by these, in many cases, predatory companies, who often present their partial solution as a complete solution, something it is not.

Our disclaimer applies to the use of this info, which is provided for informational purposes only.

Q: Are there any downsides to shielding the RF from the “smart” meter?

If your home contains other sources of RF radiation, such as cordless phones or WiFi, these will be bounced back into your living space. If you have multiple external sources outside your home, like cell antennas and other “smart” meters in the neighborhood, you must consider how shielding effects those radiation sources. Measurement is key for complex situations, but not hard for people to learn themselves. Basic RF meters are available from the Stop Smart Meters! store.

That said, shielding material between you and your “smart” meter can cut down the worst of it. However, we do not guarantee that this measure will help all persons made sick by their “smart” meters, because other electrical issues appear to factor into the illness these meters are causing, including dirty electricity. Grounding is always recommended for any shielding arrangement.  At the end of the day, it is always preferable to remove the source of the radiation. (see section on changing a meter)

Q: Can I shield the RF from my gas meter?

Gas meters are often free-standing and thus it could be easier to cut the emissions from the “smart” module on your gas meter. We have information from a southern California utility customer who shielded her gas meter, so as to cut the RF going into her house, but not cut it off from communicating with the mesh network. She measured the RF before and after, and says the amount entering her home from the gas meter was greatly reduced. She used a flexible metal screening mesh from a big-box store and a stapler, wrapping the meter and stapling it in place, and then cutting an opening in the side furthest from her house, to let the signal out. This she says, appears to direct the RF away from her home. Stop Smart Meters! can’t assure your results, nor the safety of this arrangement.

  1. Shirley Withers says:

Last year on October 20th, I saw a man go around my house to the back, so I went out to see why he was there. He had ripped off the electric meter and was replacing it. I asked him what he was doing, and he said he was installing a smart meter. I told him I did not want one. He asked why, and I told him that it is an invasion of privacy, and possible health issues, and that we had not been notified that we were going to get one. He said that we had been sent two letters and one phone call regarding it being installed. I told him we got neither. He put the meter in, and we more or less forgot about it. On January 14th, 2011, I awoke at around 12:30 AM with a wildly beating heart. I could hardly breathe, it was pounding so hard, and so erratic. I did not know what was happening, and thought I might be having a heart attack, although I have been told that since my cholesterol is extremely good, and I have a strong heart beat, that it should be unlikely. I took and aspirin and went back to bed, and it continued for about 5 hours. Finally, I woke my husband and told him what was happening. 9/11 was called and by the time they arrived, my heart had settled down. My blood pressure was no longer 168/101 (Normally around 112/70) and the EMT’s did not take me to the emergency room, but my family did. At the hospital they could find nothing wrong, so I was released. On January 19th, the same thing happened again, and I went to emergency, who told me to see a cardiologist. I wore a monitor, and it was determined that I had tachycardia and atrial fibrillation. I tried 3 medications, which I could not tolerate, went into shock, had a terrible time until March 15th, when a pacemaker was installed. I was having “Episodes” continually until April 27th (My last one) and we left On April 28th, and went to a house in Arizona for the summer, with no smart meter. I have now returned, but have not had an episode since April 27th. Since I have the pacemaker I cannot detect when it happens, so won’t know until March whether I am again having them, when I will again have the pacemaker checked. The smart meter is about 3 feet from my head when I am lying in bed (Through the wall) so this is very upsetting. Also, since the episodes stopped when I left the bedroom the nights that I first had problems, also makes it suspect, and then, after being gone for months, and having no episodes, it certainly looks like it is the smart meter. I have some cordless phones in the house, but they have always been there. There are many cordless phones, microwave, etc. in the house in Arizona also. I asked San Diego Gas and Elec. to either have this meter removed, and replaced with an analog one, or else have it adjusted so it only comes on once a day. They refused both options, and insist that they are perfectly safe. I find out now, that people can, at least temporarily, opt out of having one put in. I have 4 daughters who have done this, but for me it is too late. They put it in without notice, even though they say they notified us, they did not. I do not know what else I can do to get rid of it. I am too old to stand on a street corner and hold a placard, but wish I could. I have been told that they also have a “Hub house” where all the information comes in to, and is stored, and that is downright scary. I asked SDG&E if my house was one of those hub houses, and even though I asked the rep. 3 times, she would not answer, and finally, I told her I wanted an answer to that question. She finally said that she did not know the answer, and would find out, and mail me the information . I have gotten 3 letters from them. The first was her reply, which didn’t mention anything regarding my question, it was just a fancy print out about the meters and how great they are. I contacted the CPUC and then SDG&E sent me a paper showing me how to read my meter—-an ANALOG METER! ! I wrote back and said I would love to have an analog meter again, and the one I have doesn’t allow me to read it or know what my usage is. Then I got the third letter, no mention of the reason for sending me instructions on how to read an analog meter, but denying my request to have the meter removed. They say that the CPUC mandated it. If they did, why? Also, if they did, how come Marin and Lake Counties, etc. can opt out? They admit that the meter is not used to access electricity needs, and it appears that the main reason for it is to sell information to companies who can benefit from knowing what types of electrical appliance we have.

I do not quite understand how putting aluminum foil around the meter can affect the cordless phones in my home. I guess I am not too savvy.

    • Fighting Mad says:

I have found websites about fighting smart meters which state that you can actually take your utility company to small claims court and sue them for damages for installing your meter. Go to smartmetermurder.com and they will give you instructions on how to get started. Do some investigation into Oregon’s constitution and what it says. Pay attention to the US Constitution 9th and 10th Amendments, and the our rights to “Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.” Lastly, remember that the Constitution was not written to protect the government from tyrannical people, but to protect the people from a tyrannical government. Use it to your advantage.

      • Shane says:

It not ‘life, liberty & the pursuit of happiness’ it was originally,
Life, Liberty & LAND!!!! They changed it to happiness so you can’t own LAND..!

        • David says:

I’m sorry but you are wrong! Each of the drafts of the Declaration of Independence (on display at Library of Congress and the original “engrossed ” is on display at the National Archives in Washington DC). What you are referring to is from John Locke, for example he argued in his 1689 ‘Two Treatises of Government’. This was reflected in the Virginia Declaration of Rights in 1776. Your comment seems to lead people to believe the actual US Constitution has been messed with (conspiracy theory?).

    • Gail Gardner says:

      Hi Shirley,

If your area has an opt-on option keep trying to get it removed. Whether they do or not get rid of those wireless phones. Also attach your computer to an ethernet cable if it isn’t already and turn off wi-fi. As someone who worked on IBM equipment containing massive magnets and 440v power supplies, I am extremely sensitive. Once you become sensitive through over-exposure you will be more affected by all transmitting devices.

I moved to a very rural area where the closest cell phone towers are 4.5 and further away and there are only 2 of them. There is only one other house within visual distance. When they changed out the existing digital meter for a different frequency smart meter, the first night after they installed it couldn’t get to sleep until 5:30 a.m. then slept all day Saturday and then last night never got to sleep. After daylight I finally went out and unplugged the router and phone and got some sleep.

If I can’t get the home owner (I rent space in someone else’s home to live in the middle of nowhere) to leave the cordless phone and wi-fi off, I will buy rolls of steel window screen and completely cover the room I’m in. I already put it over the meter and just hope it still transmits ok so they’ll leave it there. My intention is not to keep them from getting their readings; only to stop the insomnia, headache, tooth pain, Tinnitus, eye pressure and joint pain.

There are many videos on YouTube showing how much power cordless phones, wi-fi, microwaves, baby monitors, and wireless security systems put out. They are far worse for us than sitting in front of a computer all day.

Be aware that there are now meters that look like analog meters (with the disk that spins inside and numbers that turn), but they have transmitters hidden inside them to fool people who don’t want a smart meter.

      • Paul says:

Do you happen to have any metal fillings or other dental work in your mouth ? You mentioned tooth pain-

I had a permanent retainer installed that caused my EHS to go through the roof. Symptoms (tinnitus especially) were all most instantaneously relieved when I finally had it removed 6 months later.

        • Elocin says:

about a week after i had a root canal/crown build up on my very back upper tooth, i began having tinnitus. been to many doctors, and audiologists. they all say everything should be normal. after 12 years of this, ive decided that is was the dental work that is causing my tinnitus. i plan on having that tooth extracted when i can afford it.

      • LN Yonkers says:

When I had solar panels installed I was given a smart meter – I didn’t know the difference at the time. Also ConEd installed a smart meter without telling me one day. Now I have 2 smart meters on the same corner of my house. Now COYonkers wants to install a water smart meter. I am refusing and opting out. How bad are two smart meters, and how bad would 3 be? does anyone know? Is this an amplification situation? Can ConEd be sued re this? They are such rats.

  3. Denny says:

Can one LEGALLY block an “over the air signal” from going to and from one’s property?

In other words, a simple metal shield over (but not touching a Smartmeter in any way) should prevent those signals from going to and fro (rendering it useless) and that shield would be on the owners property.

    Any thoughts?

    • Redi Kilowatt says:

      Denny,
I don’t know the answer, but I’m sure that the FCC has laws in place to protect corporate signals of all kinds.
Take the case of Rupert Murdoch (the owner of DirecTv ).
Rupert successfully sued individuals who received his signals, decrypted them and watched them on their television sets without giving him any compensation.
It was called “theft of signal”. In this case, the signals were being transmitted from various network and entertainment feeds up to satellites orbiting above the earth, and then spot beaming them down in the free air everywhere in the world. That meant that those signals are on basically every ones property, but they are encrypted, and the user must pay for the decryption device to view the signals.
That case is much different than the smart meter issue, because the utility corporations forced the installation of their corporate owned revenue collection system transmitters on private property without permission from the owner or compensation for leasing the transmitter sites.
Even though these powerful corporations own the FCC and make the laws, those laws could be challenged in a court of law. To me, that is a big issue that would take big money to fight in court.
Who knows if there is actually any laws on the books that says a person cannot block signals eminating from a corporate transmitter placed on private property without the owners consent ? That is something that will need to be brought out in a court of law to define. In the meantime, I see no reason at all NOT to block unwanted radio signals on your property, and let the chips fall where they will. Maybe the utilities will press charges, or maybe they will just raise your rates to pay for manual meter reads.
Personally, I don’t have a SmartMeter or any extra money to fight the giant corporations, but I would love to see a case tried in court. It would certainly bring out some details that were not though of when the radio meter project was conceived. Who knows, maybe that would be the straw that broke the utility camels back if they lost.

      • Mia Nony says:

Instead of defining ourselves through the eyes of the likes of Rupert Murdoch, instead of utility “customers” defining themselves by using corporate frames of reference while remaining on the defensive….. try the strategic offensive.

Did anyone ever agree to allow the utility to totally change the nature of the consumer utility relationship and to electronically trespass past the owner’s meter base and then monitor and use every part of the circuitry on the owner’s side of that boundary?

How is every utility not practicing usurpation and theft of unshielded house wiring to serve corporate interests?

How is that not a case of a corporation passing along all costs for all wear and tear and damage to the owner’s unshielded electrical circuitry, using ill equipped house wiring to carry corrosive microwave frequencies it was never meant to withstand?

How has each utility not implemented a fundamental paradigm shift by covertly taking over every home’s ill equipped electrical system as well as electronic control of every item plugged into it?

Since when do “customers” have to accept the conversion of all such privately owned systems into an circuitry extension of the utility’s own data collection and monitoring system?

How isn’t the use of home wiring on private property the same thing as turning one’s home into a data mining network system locus?

How is this not a case of each utility conducting corporate data mining on private property while inter linking private data with up to 5000 other similarly invaded and co-opted homes, having converted each and every one into one continuous network management system?

And what assurance do we have that having breached this boundary they are not using house wiring to harvest and recycle and resell back to each customer the closed loop energy generation system while they may now use your home not only to transmit energy through but use your home to create energy?
Lastly, how is any of that legal?

        • Nancy says:

          Furthermore,

How does the electric company have the right to access my analog meter base and board on which it rests?

The onus to prove these are safe rests with the utility companies.

        • Fighting Mad says:

It’s NOT legal. It’s the same thing that the NSA is being exposed for now by Snowden. It’s nobody’s business how much time I spend in the shower and how hot the water is! Give me a break!

      • Jeff says:

Funny isn’t it. When someone spies on your wifi network you are told there is no expectation of privacy since you are “broadcasting” your network signal. But if you are a corporation you can control who and what views your signals.

      • Emily Taylor says:

The fcc doesn’t care or enforce anything secondly it’s a part 15 device so they have no protection, same as wifi which is built on a vulnerable unlicensed service, pull your dick out of your tinfoil wearing ass and actually learn something.

    • admin says:

@Denny Just saw this–Here is a simple DIY solution to the RF! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XgahFhmjFHM

Total blockage of the RF from electric smart meters isn’t easy, but we encourage you to try. RF can sneak out of quite small holes, so seal up your arrangement well. Please let us know how it goes for you. Aluminum screening is cheap and effective: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s-oJnvCZrt4 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xJzBeUeXb0Q

People in contact with SSM! have tried different things, with different results. One customer in SoCal covered her gas meter with foil, and the utility came out to investigate—so that tells you the signal was sufficiently impeded as to not get to the collector antenna. Whether it was blocked completely you wouldn’t know without testing for RF emissions. The customer was on the opt-out list for the electric smart meters, so when they came out, they disabled the RF-transmitter inside the gas unit without any objection, and then left it that way. Customer 1, SCE 0.

Other places, utilities simply rip off the foil. If you were to build something substantial and affixed to your house, that would raise very interesting issues, and, like Redi Kilowatt, we would love to see this fleshed out in a court. The basic issues of who owns the very air around your home is raised, and what rights you have to protect yourself from harm or surveillance.

The thing I know of that is prohibited by the FCC is any device that *actively* interferes with RF transmissions—like the “cell-phone jammer” devices that came out a few years ago, and were only available underground or offshore. Those devices emit a countering signal that prevents the first signal from being properly transmitted. Those jammers also produce their own RF field.

But aluminum foil from a supermarket, or sheets of steel from a hardware store—I hope we don’t see a day when such things are banned.

  4. Denny says:

Thanks for all the info. A friend suggested some type of creative “Ornamental Art Work” to block the signal 😉

  5. Denny says:

BTW, my meter is on the side of my house. I have fenced yard and a locked gate. PG&E meter readers have not been on my property for years. They read my meter when they are in the next door neighbors yard (they can see it through a chain link fence that seperates the two properties).

  6. Denny says:

That is, my analog meter. I’m on the delay list …..

  7. Denny says:

The head of my bed is up against the inside wall where my analog meter is presently mounted, about seven feet from my head. I wonder if draping that same aluminum mesh screening against the inner wall will keep the RF from speading into the room (if they force a SM on me)?

    • Redi Kilowatt says:

      Denny,
PG&E reads my meter with a scope, and when they make mistakes, I usually let it slide until the next bill arrives. They usually get it right the next month, but if they don’t, I phone in the read.
I would offer to phone in the read for my trusty analog meter every month, but that would hurt my sweet girl who reads my meter with a scope. I would feel guilty if I was a contributor to her job loss.
Long live the PG&E meter readers !

    • Have you checked the magnetic field at the head of your bed?

  8. Concerned citizen says:

    Denny –

I need to let you know that all the electricity to your home comes in through the meter, whether it’s analog or digital. This means that the electromagnetic field is extremely high in your home around that area, dropping off as you back away from that area. I would definitely rearrange your bed to another wall in the room.

When we moved into our house, the previous owner’s chair in the family room was about 2 feet from the meter. I took emf measurements and rearranged our room so that my husband’s chair would be about 15 feet from the meter, and we placed the tv in that corner near the meter.

  9. Linda B Anderson says:

Does anyone know if using a device that plugs into a wall socket can effectively stop the EMF radiations?? I have seen these devices on various websites, and these claim they can stop the harmful radiation. The devices are costing about $300 and upward.

    • Tommy Borgh says:

That is bs. No device can stop another device from emitting RF energy. The only thing that is conceivable would be an active jammer that steps on the meter’s zigbee signalling in the hope that the smartmeter will stop attempting to send data after a number of unsuccessful attempts, but I doubt that’s what those “smart”meters do. More likely it’ll ramp up transmission power and keep on trying. The thing to do is to shield it completely in an enclosure. The meter will still ramp up transmission power inside the shielded enclosure but that’s a good thing as that can cause the rf components to burn out.

This is however not a complete solution to the “smart”meter problem. If you deny the smartmeter the ability to communicate with it’s command and control, the meter in future can be programmed to cut power after a certain amount of time without c&c communication.

      • Mia Nony says:

A formalized jammer which matches a frequency in order to cancel it is illegal. But matching a frequency to a frequency to cancel the first frequency is not.
Then there are radio geeks who seem to really understand this stuff.
Regarding this question, try reading the whole page but in particular there is one (number 20) on one such website:
        excerpt:
They’re also putting in the Itron meters here in BC (BC Hydro/Corix), and being very subversive about it, they won’t answer basic questions, etc.
Heard they were using MSP430/CC1100 @ 910-920Mhz(TI chips)in the Itron meters.
The MSP430/CC1100 are horribly “un” selective if they don’t use filters, which they probably don’t.. {worked with them in the past, {keyed a 100mW Xmitter@both 430 &4 at 40Mhz, with “433Mhz” MSPs in the building..it completely paralyzed ALL the MSP430/CC1100s units in the entire building!}.
        Run a simple continuous 910mhz {+or-20 Mhz} 100mW video transmitter next to the chips/meter & they’re rendered useless!
(but that would be wrong, so I’m not really suggesting that)
        Cheers!

    • Gail Gardner says:

      Hi Linda,

Those devices are to filter out noise on the 60hz a/c signal running through the wires of your house to outlets, switches and lights. They are not to stop EMF. There are videos on YouTube that explain this.

    • Colleen says:

We have EMF protectors in the form of plugins from LessEMF.com. We also have an EMF meter. We plugged in the devices to the highest-reading outlets. Measuring the EMFs in the room when they are not plugged in vs plugged in makes a huge difference in the EMF reading.

  12. Evelyn Montalvo says:

I have a Smartmeter at my home but it is installed very, very far away from where we live and sleep. However, in early June, I started spending 2 nights a week at my son’s home to babysit for their new baby. I noticed I was having this awful “waking” sleep with ringing, buzzing and racing thoughts when I should be asleep. The last time I was there, I started having severe headaches about 3 am. I realized his Smartmeter is on the opposite side of my bedroom wall about 9 feet from my head. Coincidence–I don’t think so. I haven’t stayed there for the past 2 weeks. I bring the baby over here or drive back and forth–even though it is very far.

  13. Tommy Borgh says:

I think the most important question which I haven’t seen asked anywhere is: Why do smartmeters have to transmit continuously? It’s only about getting the power reading at the end of the month right? That’s with protocol overhead, encryption and authentication about 300-500 bytes of data, a few short transmissions lasting a few milliseconds once a month, 12 times a year. How come these things are communicating constantly?

Oh I know I’m asking a real stupid question here, we all know the idea is in the end for the utility to monitor and control all our individual appliances. The idea is that the smart meter will spew forth even more RF radiation when it starts to talk to specifically enabled new appliances WITHIN your house. The day will come when you can’t even run the refrigerator you just bought without visiting the utility’s website and selecting an energy plan for it. That refrigerator will come with a serial number and you will need to find that number in a list of devices your smartmeter sees but doesn’t know about yet. The refrigerator will not work at all without authorization from the smart meter. It will limit itself to a few milli-amperes until it has received authorization. To get that you will need to pair that refrigerator like a bluetooth device with the smartmeter and the utility will know you now have a Westinghouse model XYZ refrigerator and it will charge you a specific rate for that device. That’s why.

    • Steve says:

Very plausible indeed! But for those of us who are awake, that will drive the market for “dumb” appliances to avoid all that nonsense.

Network Management & Communications Equipment are not simply meters. They have countless other functions. They run continuously for reasons that have nothing at all to do with the rationed overpriced provision of an “estimate” of what may well be ambient energy in the area of the meter, translated into “usage”. However, the more energy the smart grid generates from every node read by every other node, the more it is translated into usage, even tho it isn’t, and the more money is to be made. Why would the utility be motivated to stop an energy goose laying golden data eggs? Because it causes collateral damage? Not a concern for a profit oriented corporation. No they need to BE stopped.

Community Rights educator Paul Cienfuegos explains how “We The People” are exercising the authority to govern ourselves and dismantle corporate rule.
When small farmers in rural Pennsylvania wanted to say “no” to a corporate factory farm coming into their community, they learned they couldn’t, because it would violate the corporation’s “rights” and state pre-emption laws.
So they did something technically illegal – their town passed an innovative ordinance banning corporate factory farming.
      It worked!
      The corporation left town.
Pittsburgh upshifted the approach: RATHER THAN DEFINE WHAT WE DON’T WANT, DEFINE WHAT WE DO WANT.
Their “Right to Water” stopped natural gas fracking in the city. Ordinances like this have been passed in over 150 communities in 9 states.

For at least a couple of years, newer smart phones have had sections in their FCC/IC (and references to other countries) lingo in their user/safety manuals that
specify OUTDOOR USE OF THE DEVICE IS PROHIBITED BY LAW FOR SOME SPECIFIC FREQUENCIES AROUND 5200-5600 MHZ ( the newer generation of WiFi). Some mention of interference with satellites too.

        This raises an interesting question.
Isn’t the right to have no interference a two way street when it comes to UNLICENSED devices?
Doesn’t a smart meter operate on an unlicensed bandwidth?

Under Section 15 of the FCC, is it not the case that there is always some variation on the following printed somewhere on any unlicensed device operating on any unlicensed bandwidth?

THIS DEVICE COMPLIES WITH PART 15 OF THE FCC RULES.
OPERATION IS SUBJECT TO THE FOLLOWING TWO CONDITIONS:

        (1) THIS DEVICE MAY NOT CAUSE HARMFUL INTERFERENCE, AND
        (2) THIS DEVICE MUST ACCEPT ANY INTERFERENCE RECEIVED, INCLUDING INTERFERENCE THAT MAY CAUSE UNDESIRED OPERATION.

They use LRAD (formerly known as the active denial system). Lrad is an acoustical system. It can be used like the audio spotlight (Holosonics) and is commercially available to put sound you one persons head and not the person next to him. The police hack into your “electric smart” meter using millimeter wifi radar. Directing millimeter waves at your electric meter, they can send lasers and charges of electric onto your body. There is a flashlight the diablo wireless electric taser. It is quite painful. They can pulse lasers into your home to heat you up and direct them using the millimeter wave scanners (similar to airport scanner) to see even through your clothes. There is no privacy anymore. They can use the technology to hack into your phones, computers, televisions, and any electronic you have. You are never alone. If you tell someone, they put you in a mental health facility and tag you with a radio frequency identification tag. (Darpa.mil states that these are untested applications and require informed consent.) The National Institute of Justice are performing these tests. But they talk to you like they aren’t. But their own website says they are. It is so painful! Any shielding tips?

    • Paul H. says:

I have found an inexpensive way to shield while sleeping. Remember that the metal coils in your bed spring act as an antenna and will amplify radiofrequency radiation 20 decibels

      http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/2601437/

First, turn the power off at the breaker as electromagnetic radiation travels on energized wiring.

Second, place cases of bottled water around your bed as the will absorb microwaves(300mhz-300ghz). Make sure they are 2 feet or so above your head.

Third, place radiant barrier panels (the ones with aluminum foil on both sides) over your bed as a roof using the cases of water as walls.

Make sure that you sleep the farthest away from the breaker box as they use a 500khz< field and it travels on copper wiring in a 10 foot plume. Use a battery operated am radio(older the better) set to 530khz as a detector, moving it around in all different directions to hear something other than typical soft static.
You also may hear a radio station in the distance. This is not a good sign because there is not a radio station assigned to this frequency.

Gigahertz Solutions makes equipment that is easy to use. They have both audible and visual aides to help find where the problem is coming from.

  15. LJB says:

About a year before my mother was diagnosed with Alzheimers–or, rather Alzheimers-like symptoms–the electric company replaced our old analog meter outside with a digital “smart” meter. Since then I’ve noticed websites like this one speaking out against them for pouring out dangerous RF radiation inducing Alzheimer’s-like symptoms in people. To give a better perspective, the unit is mounted right outside our kitchen window and my mother sits at the kitchen table literally within six feet of this meter. I myself have felt a bit dizzy and light-headed at times in the kitchen. I’ve had trouble sleeping many times (same as my mother) and often a ringing in my ears (which I attributed to the heavy bulldozers and other machinery running next door as work on God’s McMansion continues or the volume on TV sets turned to the max so my mother can “hear” them despite the fact that they’re never loud enough and I have to keep shouting to her over them until she yells back at me for shouting at Her.). But when these other potential sources are Not running, the symptoms persist. Regarding dizzyness, I suspected a gas leak but detected nothing out of the ordinary. The only new addition to our house was this meter. In fact the house is fully “wired” in that there are No wireless systems installed in this 50-year old house–TVs, phones, computers, even mice and keyboards are of the old hardwired variety. I even use dial-up Internet access. No cell phone is in use (except one used for emergency use normally turned off or stored in a car). The only “wireless” devices are TV remotes which work on harmless pulsed infrared light.

I’d really like to get this box removed and the old analog unit put back in but nobody listens, of course. It’s akin to placing guys like me into the paranoid schizophrenic category of lunatics who think their TV sets are invading their minds and walk around wearing aluminum foil hats. But of course that’ s exactly what big business wants everyone to believe. Profit over people.

    • Mia Nony says:

      “Profit over people.”
That is a corporate slogan. Ours must be the opposite. Never let the enemy gain outposts in your head.

  16. Darrin says:

Just a thought for anyone. What about a fully grounded copper Faraday cage inside of a permanent locked enclosure built directly on the side of your house. Of course, you would have to put some holes through your wall to connect to an inside cage to completely surround your meter. If you wanted to go really crazy, and had some disposable income, the thought of wrapping every piece of conduit and wire in the house with a grounded copper cage comes into mind. That would send the power company into a complete frenzy of mass confusion. There are also hard line RF filters that can be put on outlets or wiring to limit transfer of data in that manner as well.

The true solution is to cancel your power service and construct natural power solutions in your home. Wind, solar, and geothermal are well proven technologies that can provide a complete replacement to commercial power. The price for ready built systems are expensive up front, but do provide a return in the long run. Building a system yourself can be a task, but is very rewarding in the fact that you know your system inside and out. There are even plenty of tutorial videos online that show every step of the way, even how to make solar panels from scratch, for cheep. There are even emerging free energy systems that the establishment is trying their best to squash out of existence. The concept of free energy is quite easy to comprehend, and apparently it is also pretty easy to produce. Peswiki is a good place to find information on this emerging technology.

Even if you completely stop your smart meter, or even get it removed and replaced with and analog one, there is still no stopping the radiation. Yes you may stop that device. What about your cell phone, wireless router, computers, tablets, smart TVs, and every other device that litters our house with the same frequency wireless data transmission. Do we all forget the “old” home phones that were so great and used 2.4ghz signal so you could talk down the street. Same technology, just implemented in a different way. Just like almost every wireless mouse and keyboard , unless you have a bluetooth device. Even if it is bluetooth, how do we know what the long term effects of its wireless transmission are on the body.

Now, if you can get past those two things and completely cut out all wireless devices in the home(good luck living a normal life), what about your neighbors? Are you going to convince them to do the same as you? Do you think they will? I bet you will find that your life gets a lot more lonely, real quick. Yes we can do our part to limit RF radiation in our own home, but we cannot affect the rest of the world if everyone is oblivious to the issue. Why, if it is so well known about the problems of RF radiation, hasn’t someone figured out a new wireless data transmission technology that is safe?

The real reason for the problem is public ignorance. Yes, it is our fault. We are the ones that let it get to this point. Sure, there are some that are speaking out about issues, but the general public has a true disdain for truth. The general public hates hearing about the problems around them, and really don’t care what is going on outside of their immediate life, or lack of. Unplug and conversate face to face with your neighbors. Enjoy the real world. Stop looking down at your phone and start looking up at the sky. Stop doing what they want you to do, and start doing what you are supposed to do. Its real simple. An aware public is a powerful one.

Pull your head out of your a$$. Take a nice deep fresh breath of aluminum filled air, and wake up. We are the problem, and only we are the solution.

    • Angie says:

      Well said Darrin, well said!

After 2 months of trying to convince Hydro One to allow us to have an analog meter put back on, we have gave up the fight and decided to take matters into our own hands and hire an electrician to move the meter approx 60 feet to our hydro pole on our property (the meter was located on our master bedroom wall directly behind our headboard. It was making me so sick that we had to sleep on th other end of our house in the living room for 2 months. We were waiting to hear back from a supervisor from Hydro One and to this day are still being ignored.) Anyway long story short is moving the the meter away from the house has not helped one bit….it is actually WORSE! Now instead o silently torturing me, the meter is now producing a loud buzzing noise that is even audible to my half deaf husband! Call me crazy now Hydro One! You can hear it buzzing away out there as I write. I am inside my house…windows closed…a good 60 feet away. The electrician called them on my behalf to ask them if something could be wrong with it because he doesn’t believe it should be buzzing like this and they just laughed and said it is normal. So the $780 I spent was a complete waste of money and should have been put towards a downpayment on solar or geothermal or something. Feel completely defeated. I want to shoot my smart meter 🙁

      • Steve says:

Is the problem worse just due to the audible buzz, or does radiation seem to be worse? Radiation drops off with the square of the distance, so 60 feet away should be very good. Did the meter start buzzing after it was moved? If it was that loud before, you would have heard it when it was just outside your bedroom wall. Call Hydro One relentlessly to come and fix the problem. If they refuse, they will have to suffer the expense of tying up their customer service department with your relentless requests. You might also try encasing the meter on the pole with sound insulating materials. Wrapping with foam should work well. Build a box from wood and maybe even paver stones for additional sound attenuation.

      • Ron says:

        Shooting a smart meter hmmmm.

Paul By chance have you heard about an rf/ microwave frequency filter? I mean the kind the Swedish utilities actually OFFER to customers, created to filter out microwaves for 50 hertz service in Sweden, and given freely to the customer if they want one? There is info on this at eiwellspring.com. Anyway I gather some kind of rf choke/filter is only just available, here in North America, adapted for 60 hertz power transmission service. I understand it gets installed either at the electrical mast or at the panel. I gather it’s used by the military, and is able to handle/filter everything from ultra low frequencies right on up to lightening. Are you familiar with this?

I have been concerned about smart meters for a while. we live in a townhouse. there are 3 connected units. we are on the far end in 3. all 3 stupid meters, 1 for each unit, are in a vertical row on the outside wall of our unit. the outside of our dining room wall, about 5 feet from where I am sitting at the computer. my searching for RF shielding ideas brought me to this page. It is good to see so many other concerned people as, of course my neighbors and landlords think I am a whack-job for thinking about RF’s from an electric meter. APS(Arizona power supply) said i could get our meter removed and replaced with an nalog but, there would still be the other 2 smart meters for the other 2 units. when i called to find out when the stupid meters were installed, I was giveb the date, july,2009. that was the month before we moved in-we rent. any suggestions on how to shield all 3 meters? is there something i should put inside on my dining room wall?

  19. Marshall says:

Hello. I have an interesting question. I live at an apartment complex and I want to block all the signals to all the smart meters which are all together 38 of them on the other side of my wall that supllies the entire apartment complex. I dont have 1 smart meter to worry about but 38!!!!! HOLY SHIT RIGHT!!!!????? CAN I USE A CELL PHONE JAMMER TO JAM THE SIGNAL TO ALL OF THEM instead of the foil method or metal bucket. I want to just jam the signal and throw the electric company on a wild goose chase! The smart meters are now more then 8 inches apart! 10 up and down and 4 across! talk about a darn death trap! ARE Cellphone blockers Jammers effective or do I need a stronger jammer! I do not want to cover it. I want to like sneak the jammer in a tight spot not to far (Hidden) and let it do it thing! Its just an idea (Could this be effective>?)

    • Paul H says:

A “jammer” will screw you up too. I suggest using a Swiss Shield Natural bed canopy. Along with a protective mat. Turn the power off to your living area. Also, look into moving to a house in the country.

I suppose the only effective way to stop their transmissions would be to place a microwave oven on a wooden stool and trip the door so it will turn on. Placing the smart meter so that it’s inside for 10-15 seconds will fry the smart meters antenna. The default switch is set for on.

Please don’t try this at home as this is dangerous to your health and the power company may be a little upset when this happens over and over again.

Thank you for all of the information.

Surely, we can’t be the only two in the area that don’t want these meters. I would like to talk to you and maybe we can figure something out. Folks, I am a licensed amateur radio operator. “Hams” know all about RF and leakage as we must prove to the FCC that our radio antennas can cause no harm to nearby neighbors. The RF from the smart-meter is so low as to be insignificant. Your WIFI router puts out more RF, along with your cellphone and many other devices in your home (like a wireless alarm system or a cordless phone system).

These are all VERY low output — stop worrying about it. …. and privacy ! what privacy? Do you have a credit card? How about a bank account? Ever purchased a home or a car? There is no privacy in the 21st century. Anyone with a computer can find out where you live, what is your phone number, if you have a criminal record etc etc… just from things that you use everyday or have purchased in the past.

In my case all my personal info is published on the FCC amateur license web site; as are all licensed amateur radio operators. No one cares about how much electricity you are using except for the folks that want you to pay them for it. Calm down, the symptoms some of you have described above are NOT from RF — HIGH RF is much like a microwave and can burn you. It does not make you dizzy or make your heart race, or keep you awake at night.

    • Paul H says:

      jl, Some things to ponder.

The smart meters are attached to the front end of every home and office’s energized wiring. Errors could produce much larger magnetic fields amplifying the pulsed signal so that every square inch of your body absorbs it. When was the last time you enjoyed taking a picture in the dark and while staring into the flash. Get where I’m going here? Don’t worry as it will never burn you… in case you didn’t know how intricate and delicate the cell is. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GVqJdAqTD4Q

Your antenna hopefully isn’t broadcasting 24/7. The smart grid data dump is the worst. What do you think the ambient wattage would be if 10,000 meters transmitted at 1/4 watt simultaneously somewhere in the early morning hours. Would it be possible that after the brain absorbed this 15-120 second amplified power it might wake up? Because that’s what almost everyone is doing.

The same FCC with Tom Wheeler, a telecommunications lobbyist, at the helm? Are you joking?

      • The radiation power of smart meters, grids, LoRa devices is very small compared to other RF signals “walking” inside or through your home. How much RF comes from or due to your TV set? A cable TV modem and receiver can be very powerful and small leakage in cabling and device can be much higher.
(many airports and plains can realize if you use a cable TV system, they would like idea to shield your home because your home is remarkable source of radiation and interferences).
BTW: shielding with aluminum foil blocks just electrical field, magnetic field goes through. RF waves have always both parts. And having small gaps, slots in shield can create a “better” antenna to send now as a directed beam into your home, hopefully not directly towards your couch.
Instead to shield your home to avoid smart meter waves affecting your health the “improvements” should go first as: get rid of all modern electronic devices in your home. Switch off your cellphone if getting close to you (shorter as length of your stretched arm). Do not use any simple electrical engine such as a fridge, washer, fans, hair dryers, mills, fruit mixers, drilling tools … with commutators (creating small blue electrical sparks inside which are also RF sources) …
And: consider when unlocking your car with electronic keys, wireless garage opener, driving in your car and having active cellphone with you inside, listening to music via Bluetooth receivers, kids playing with smartphones, tablets and WiFi/BT forgotten to disable would grill you instantly after a 5 minute ride? 😉
Radiation in cars can be 100 times higher as in your home, my guess, even and because it is already a quite perfect Faraday Cage and quite perfect shielded.
Not driving cars anymore might be healthier. 😉

FYI…After purchasing and testing the RF Meter shield (with very good results), I can attest to benefiting from this product and the truth in the following information (from their marketing campaign):

In an effort to protect consumers from radiation emitted by smart meters, this new innovative device is designed to help shield consumers from the radiation emitted by their smart meters. Now consumers have one more level of protection from the potentially harmful radiation emitted by smart meters.

The RF Meter Shield is a new patent pending design that is woven with a special blend of metallic materials which provide flexibility for easy installation on all smart meters. These proprietary materials aid in the containment and absorption of potentially harmful RF radiation & EMF radiation. The remaining RF radiation & EMF radiation in contained by the smart meter’s existing metal enclosure.

Up until now there were only 2-choices if you wanted to avoid smart meter radiation: Opting Out (the utilities charge an extra service fee amounting to over $90.00 annually), or purchasing a cumbersome, custom fit, metal enclosure (difficult to install and often costing over $120.00).

With the RF Meter Shield, protection from potentially harmful RF radiation & EMF radiation emitted by smart meters is only $21.95. The RF Meter Shield reduces RF & EMF radiation by up to 99 %. It has a 30-Day Money Back Guarantee and a 5-Year Warranty.

The RF Meter Shield is easy to install: Slip the RF Meter Shield over the smart meter’s glass dome. Internal elastic securely holds the RF Meter Shield in place. RF Meter Shield Model: SX1000418 fits all smart meter glass covers up to a 6.5″ diameter X 6.0″ long (all the smart meters currently manufactured). The elastic end of the RF Meter Shield can be rolled-up to snuggly fit shorter glass domes.

Please don’t shield your smartmeters! In a year or two you will find the first smart grid enabled appliances and devices to hit the market. They will need to interface with the smart meter over the radio frequency interface. At first this will be optional but in the end every device you own will need to continuously acquire authorization to operate at a certain wattage or shut down. Also the smart meter will not allow more power to pass into your house than what has been authorized and we will have laws and regulations in place that will make it a felony to interfere with this process in any way. Also not using any power at all is not going to work either. Since we know how much power you ought to be using in average if you significantly use less we will report you to the authorities as well. Our America, our rules.

So far I have successfully fended off installation of the AMR meter. However, we had solar installed in November. I asked the solar company about it, and (supposedly having checked, with apologies and apparent regret) told me we would have to allow the AMR meter–to enable the excess solar to feed back to the power company, and so that we wouldn’t be charged for the outgoing power as well as the incoming! (Does anyone know if this really *is* the case?)

Still waiting for the power company to come do their inspection (and install the AMR meter) 12 1/2 weeks since the solar installation… But once that’s done, I do plan on shielding the bloody thing. I could get some heavy aluminum foil, but I also have some thin lead sheeting… Which would work better?

    • Paul H says:

Unfortunately you have contaminated your home’s entire electric field with dirty electricity from the solar company’s meter and inverter. The digital meter sends RF over energized wiring. If it were me I would shut the solar off whenever I was home.
