Quotes of the Month
“(the county ordinance banning ‘smart’ meters) is a way for us to tell PG&E that we want you to stop implementing this until the risks are better known, and it’s a way to tell our citizens that we hear them…”
-Marin County Supervisor Charles McGlashan, a champion of the cause who sadly died suddenly of a heart attack on March 27th. Our deep condolences to his family and friends. Vol. 7 of the SSM! Bulletin is dedicated to Charles. (see below)
“There’s too many people waking up at the exact time,” she said. “I mean, that’s a big red flag right there that others are having the same symptoms at the same time.”
-Julie Kieborz, Phoenix mother of 4 who complained of sleeplessness from her ‘smart’ meter: http://www.kpho.com/news/26939809/detail.html , http://www.kpho.com/news/26946007/detail.html
“Thanks to the work of people like Stop Smart Meters!, communities are waking up to the problem. Especially in California…”
-Mike Opelka, The Blaze http://www.theblaze.com/stories/ironically-named-smart-meters-prove-to-be-a-dumb-idea/
IMPORTANT EVENTS THIS THURS- YOUR ATTENDANCE AND SUPPORT REQ’D!
1) PROTEST FCC CHAIR GENACHOWSKI IN MOUNTAIN VIEW THURSDAY
The Federal Communications Commission’s weak limits on human exposure to microwave radiation- one of the most lenient in the world and based solely on thermal impacts- allowed the current smart meter debacle to unfold with all of its devastating health impacts. Non-thermal biological impacts of EMF have now been documented in the Journal of the American Medical Association yet our federal agency in charge of health is still pretending they don’t exist. Enough is enough.
There will be a PROTEST outside the Computer History Museum this Thursday April 14th beginning at 5:30pm 1401 N. Shoreline Blvd., Mountain View. Genachowski’s speech begins at 7pm and you can buy tickets online. Please rsvp to nbeety@netzero.net if you are planning on attending.
2) CALIFORNIA PUBLIC UTILITIES COMMISSION (CPUC) meeting at 505 Van Ness Avenue (at McAllister, near City Hall) in San Francisco this Thursday, April 14th to speak at their morning meeting. PG&E’s COP OUT IS SIMPLY NOT ENOUGH! The Governor must also remove Michael Peevey from the Chair immediately. Peevey is a former utility executive with Southern California Edison — the classic fox watching the hen house, a man who has made the CPUC into a laughing stock and a lapdog to the industry.
If you intend to speak at the CPUC meeting, you will have 1 minute, and you must arrive by 8:45 a.m. to sign up. The CPUC meeting itself begins at 9:00 a.m. You can also sign up by Noon on Wednesday here: https://ia.cpuc.ca.gov/requesttocomment/ To watch the meeting live (or any other archived meeting online- see http://www.californiaadmin.com/cpuc.shtml
COMMENTS ON ABOLISHING LANDLINES ARE DUE TO THE FCC BY APRIL 18
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) announced a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking that is the first step toward abolishing landlines. Read the public notice. The FCC seeks to use funds from the Universal Service Fund for broadband and voice over internet protocol services to homes. For ideas to help you formulate your remarks, go to http://tinyurl.com/62zfv55 and http://tinyurl.com/66ezepv
Comments to the Proposed Rulemaking are due by April 18. To comment, go to http://www.regulations.gov/#!submitComment;D=FCC-2011-0078-0001
ACTIONS TO TAKE FROM HOME
1. Contact the Governor and demand an immediate emergency moratorium on ‘smart’ meter installation- and scheduled statewide hearings on public health issues. While you’re at it, demand that California’s nuclear power reactors on earthquake faults (San Onofre and Diablo Canyon) be decommissioned. Contact details here: http://gov.ca.gov/m_contact.php
2. Call CPUC Commissioners and demand an immediate moratorium and smart meter health hearings. The CPUC is continuing to deny access to public meetings by electrosensitive individuals who are unable to stand the 12+ wifi networks in the meeting room. This is despite continued requests for reasonable accommodations under the ADA for the disabled who are most impacted by this program. CPUC has had weeks now to figure out how to provide a phone in option, so people who can’t safely access the meeting chambers have remote access, and can participate in real time. Phone the commissioner below to demand a smart meter halt and equal access for EVERY member of the public to Commission meetings.
Mike Florio 415-703-1840
Catherine Sandoval 415-703-2593
Michael Peevey 415 703-3703
Timothy Simon 415 703-1407
Mark Ferron 415 703-2444
3. Submit comments about PG&E’s cop-out plan (aka “opt out” plan). Send your comments to CPUC Public Advisor, 505 Van Ness Avenue, Room 2103, San Francisco, CA 94102; or call 1-866-849-8390 or 1-415-703-2074; or email public.advisor@cpuc.ca.gov. Let them know what they can do with their scam!
4. Send an e-mail to the following CA Assemblymembers on the Utilities and Commerce Committee who are considering AB37- the ‘opt out bill’. Demand an emergency moratorium, rights for apartment dwellers, the right to retain your analog meters, and smart meter hearings at the state level, and NO EXTORTION ALLOWED BY UTILITY COMPANIES demanding ransom to keep our health!!!
Copy and paste the following into the “to” field of your e-mail program:
Assemblymember.Bradford@assembly.ca.gov, Assemblymember.Fletcher@assembly.ca.gov, Assemblymember.Buchanan@assembly.ca.gov, Assemblymember.Fong@assembly.ca.gov, Assemblymember.Fuentes@assembly.ca.gov, Assemblymember.Furutani@assembly.ca.gov, Assemblymember.Gorell@assembly.ca.gov, Assemblymember.Hernandez@assembly.ca.gov, Assemblymember.Huffman@assembly.ca.gov, Assemblymember.Knight@assembly.ca.gov, Assemblymember.Nestande@assembly.ca.gov, Assemblymember.Skinner@assembly.ca.gov, Assemblymember.Swanson@assembly.ca.gov, Assemblymember.Valadao@assembly.ca.gov
5. Lodge a formal written complaint with the CPUC- if you have suffered health or any other impacts from ‘smart’ meters (even if you don’t have a smart meter on your own home). Call the Public Advisor’s safety line at 1-800-755-1447.
6. If your local city/ county has not acted against the smart meter attack, organize local residents and demand that they do their job to protect public health and safety. SSM! can advise on this.
7. Please donate and allow Stop Smart Meters! to expand our capacity: https://stopsmartmeters.org/donate/
8. Forward this e-mail newsletter to 5 friends, and have them subscribe if they are interested.
WHAT ARE SMART METERS!?
The installation of wireless gas and electric meters is one of the largest technology rollouts in history. Yet in California and other states, there was virtually no consultation with the public and local governments in advance of the $2.2 billion “Advanced Metering Infrastructure” (or AMI) project — the first mandatory microwave radiation device to be installed on our homes and businesses. Wireless radiation has been linked with cancer and DNA damage at exposure levels far below FCC guidelines, in peer-reviewed scientific studies. “Smart” meters pose health risks, violate individual privacy, interfere with electronic appliances, increase carbon emissions and overcharge customers. But utility companies and tech firms love them because they allow them to layoff meter readers and generate more profit. Luckily, more communities every day are learning the facts and refusing the DumbMeter onslaught. Check out our primer (that you can circulate) outlining the case against wireless utility meters here: http://stopsmartmeters.wordpress.com/why-stop-smart-meters/
WHAT IS “STOP SMART METERS!”?
Growing out of the grassroots group Scotts Valley Neighbors Against Smart Meters, which was started in June 2010, Stop Smart Meters! is now a community supported statewide advocacy, media outreach, and direct action group providing activism consultation and technical assistance advice to dozens of local groups statewide (and now nationally and even internationally) who are fighting the wireless ‘smart’ meter assault.
The fight against ‘smart’ meters has brought about new, unexpected political alliances. Please join us and add your voice to thousands of others. More info, regular news updates, analysis, and tips on resisting ‘smart’ meters at our website: https://stopsmartmeters.org
THANK YOU FOR DONATING TO STOP SMART METERS!
Even if it’s only a small amount, it all adds up and it really goes a long way toward making this education and advocacy possible. Remember we are community supported- please chip in if you can! Click here to make a donation: https://stopsmartmeters.org/donate/

SMART METER CAMPAIGN UPDATES
36 CA LOCAL GOVERNMENTS UNITED IN DEMANDING A ‘SMART’ METER HALT
The number of local governments opposed to the ‘smart’ meter program continues to climb. A total of 28 cities and 8 counties throughout CA- representing 2,242,123 people- have now formally demanded a halt to PG&E’s mandatory ‘smart’ meter program. It is now illegal under local ordinance to install within the jurisdiction of 10 of these local governments. Call the sheriff or police department if you see installations in any of these areas (or if PG&E tries to install on your home against your will). The updated list of local governments protesting can be found here. Want your city or county to be added to the list? Why not get them to pass an ordinance? Sample letter here.
COMMUNITY WATER BOARD REJECTS SMART WATER METERS
The Helix Water Authority in La Mesa, CA, has decided to stop their Smart Meter Program, for now, after one week of public exposure in online news media outlets about health effects tied to smart meters. They also discussed removing all existing smart meters. http://mounthelix.patch.com/articles/helix-water-decides-new-meters-not-smart-for-now
NEW CRITICAL PROBLEM WITH ‘SMART’ METERS: A SWITCHING-MODE POWER SUPPLY — Just When You Thought It Was Safe to Opt-Out
Ironically, now that PG&E is offering to disable the wireless RF function (for a hefty price) in their smart meters, we find that there’s another extremely critical problem with the meters- one that may explain many of the health complaints reported:
New Critical Problem with 'Smart' Meters: The Switching-Mode Power Supply (SMPS)
SHRUBS DON’T LIE- (WE SHOULD) LISTEN WHEN THEY DIE
A few weeks back we featured an account of 180 smart meters on the side of an apartment complex in Berkeley. Today we received these photos from a resident of the same complex showing the dramatic effects of smart meter radiation on a nearby shrub. It appears that the poor plant is dying from the inside out. There has been ample rainfall during this time, and none of the other plants or trees on the property have been affected in the same way. Devastating photos: https://stopsmartmeters.org/2011/04/08/shrubs-dont-lie/
PG&E USES FLOOD TO FORCE ‘SMART’ METERS ON CAPITOLA
Pacific Gas and Electric sure knows how to rub salt in the wounds of communities who are already dealing with loss and catastrophe. The Santa Cruz Sentinel reported last week that PG&E installed ‘smart’ meters on a number of homes and businesses damaged in the recent floods, violating the City of Capitola’s ordinance banning ‘smart’ meters, and raising the hackles of residents and business owners who- in the midst of having to recover from a disaster, now have to worry about the health impacts and violation of privacy that the meters bring. SUPPORT THE SAN FRANCISCO CELL PHONE RIGHT TO KNOW ORDINANCE
(From the Center for Safer Wireless) Wireless companies are gaining ground in San Francisco. Their pressure on lawmakers and in the courtroom could cause the cell phone Right-To-Know Ordinance passed in July 2010 to unravel. The ordinance has not been implemented, and the Board of Supervisors is placing it under review. Read about it at http://sfappeal.com/news/2011/04/with-gavin-gone-will-supes-defend-his-cell-phone-radiation-bill-in-court.php and http://www.cnet.com/8301-17918_1-20049879-85.html Sign the petition in support of the ordinance at http://tinyurl.com/3nu7zv2

PG&E’S ‘OPT OUT’ PLAN LIKE A “NO PEE ZONE” IN A SWIMMING POOL
From a comment at the SJ Mercury: “It’s like PG&E is offering a ‘no pee zone’ in the swimming pool, it just doesn’t work. Radiation meters on our homes emitting strong microwave pulses every few minutes 24/7 is a bad idea period! With these powerful meters in close proximity to small children it is only begging for serious health consequences with chronic exposure- why would we risk it? We can do better than this- we must do better than this.” See: http://www.mercurynews.com/news/ci_17700260

MARIN COUNTY SUPERVISOR CHARLES McGLASHAN DIES OF UNTIMELY HEART ATTACK IN THE SIERRAS
Marin County has lost a visionary leader with the untimely passing of Charles McGlashan, Marin County’s Third District Supervisor. Charles died suddenly and tragically on Sunday, March 27 of an apparent heart attack in Lake Tahoe, a place to which he had deep family ties and had loved since boyhood. He is survived by his wife, Carol Misseldine, their dog, Bonnie, their three cats, their large family, as well as
friends and colleagues too numerable to count who all greatly mourn his passing.
We’ll miss you man. Charles McGlashan July 15, 1961 – March 27, 2011
FEELING LIKE A RAT? PEST CONTROL FIRMS USE SMART METER-LIKE DEVICES TO REPEL RODENTS
Stop Smart Meters! brought you the news back in February that smart grid industry types- including the head of PG&E’s ‘Smart’Meter program Greg Kiraly- were openly laughing during an industry conference about how utility customers are like rats in an experiment. Today we were reminded by the great letter to the editor by Dave Hubert in the Santa Rosa Press Democrat that wireless EMF radiation- such as the pulses sent out by your “smart” meter- are effective ways of compelling rats to leave your house.

FCC STONEWALLS ON FOIA REQUEST FOR INDUSTRY CONTACTS
Devra Lee Davis, PhD, MPH, President of Environmental Health Trust, said, “Democracy is imperiled when the government withholds information from the public about our basic health and safety. The FCC has a duty to explain what’s behind the agency’s sudden about-face regarding cell phone safety. We call on the FCC to do the right thing….” “It would appear that the FCC does not want to disclose its possible involvement with the Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association (CTIA).”

Civil Disobedience Escalates Over Smart Meters
http://chej.org/blog/2010/12/30/civil-disobedience-escalates-over-smart-meters/
We’d like to leave you with a little ditty this month:
Have You Been To Jail For Justice by Anne Feeney
Was it Cesar Chavez? Maybe it was Dorothy Day
Some will say Dr. King or Gandhi set them on their way
No matter who your mentors are it’s pretty plain to see
That, if you’ve been to jail for justice, you’re in good company
Have you been to jail for justice? I want to shake your hand
Cause sitting in and lyin’ down are ways to take a stand
Have you sung a song for freedom? or marched that picket line?
Have you been to jail for justice? Then you’re a friend of mine
You law abiding citizens, come listen to this song
Laws were made by people, and people can be wrong
Once unions were against the law, but slavery was fine
Women were denied the vote and children worked the mine
The more you study history the less you can deny it
A rotten law stays on the books til folks like us defy it
The law’s supposed to serve us, and so are the police
And when the system fails, it’s up to us to speak our peace
It takes eternal vigilance for justice to prevail
So get courage from your convictions
Let them haul you off to jail!
