1. FIVE WEEKS ON: PSREC CUTS ELECTRICITY TO HOME OF SSM! DIRECTOR FOR REFUSING TO PAY EXTORTION FEE
Though no customers of California’s PG&E, SCE, or SDG&E have been disconnected for refusing to pay “opt out” fees, in a cynical attempt to disrupt and silence a key advocate, Plumas Sierra Rural Electric Co-Operative (PSREC) disconnected electricity to the family of Stop Smart Meters! Director Josh Hart at 2pm on February 19th, 2014. The family has paid every penny of their bill, minus the extortionate ‘opt out fee’ being illegally charged to Mr. Hart.
In order to justify disconnecting a paying customer in winter, PSREC has had to resort to lying, coercion, surveillance and gag orders to stop the Harts talking about how PSREC is violating their legal rights and forcing hazardous meters on the community. And this isn’t even PG&E! Nevertheless, the local community is rallying around the Harts and there has been a flurry of supportive letters to the editor. Though it has been a hardship living without electricity in an all-electric house, the Harts are committed to refusing extortion and standing up to an electric “co-operative” that refuses to co-operate with its’ customers own physicians.

2. “WHISTLESTOP SMART METERS!” TOUR MARCH 28-APRIL 5 TAKING BACK OUR POWER IN CO, NC, GA, AND FL
Despite having his electricity disconnected on February 19th, and being embroiled in dispute with their local utility company, SSM! Director Josh Hart will be taking Stop Smart Meters! and Josh del Sol’s Take Back Your Power documentary on tour starting March 28th. He’ll be riding the rails through 16 states, stopping in Colorado, North Carolina, Georgia, and Florida to speak to groups about resisting “smart” meters, screening the film Take Back Your Power, and advising on the most effective ways to organize in your local area. These states are home to some of the worst-behaving utility companies in the country, but also burgeoning resistance movements. If you are nearby, please spread the word and come out and meet us!
