End of Year Appeal: Please Donate to Stop Smart Meters!

July 20, 2010: Demonstrators gather outside the CA ‘Public’ Utilities Commission in San Francisco to protest PG&E’s ‘smart’ meters.

I never look forward to doing this.   I’d rather be on the ground, stopping smart meters and standing up for our privacy, safety, and health.  But the reality is that campaigning has costs.  Our opponents are funded to the tune of billions of dollars, much of which is skimmed from your taxes and utility bills, and they have poured this money into groups like the Smart Grid Consumer Collaborative[1], which is spreading lies about the ‘smart grid’ and suppressing dissent.  They’re even going into schools now to teach (indoctrinate) children to think the smart grid is actually green. (it’s not)

We started our campaign three and a half years ago in June 2010.  It would be another year before the World Health Organization classified wireless emissions as a Class 2B toxic cancer causing agent.  It is a different landscape in 2013.  The problem has gone global, and so has awareness and resistance.  We have remained at the forefront of grassroots “smart” grid journalism,  while advocating for solutions and demanding justice.

Over the past two years, Stop Smart Meters! has worked closely with the makers of Take Back Your Power, providing Josh del Sol with background on the issue, hours of footage, and a global directory of anti-smart meter activists to guide him in his quest for the truth.  Now that the film is made, we are organizing screenings and community meetings, and in October we raised $12,000 for a massive bulk buy of DVD’s so people can provide the film to their elected officials and communities.

This past April, I wrote an opinion piece in the Wall St. Journal questioning the wisdom of ‘smart’ meters and raising the wireless health issue- not normally covered by the taciturn mainstream media.  We submitted testimony to the UK Parliament and the FCC, presented at numerous meetings and conferences including ones in Dublin, Ireland, Dublin, California and Sussex, England and conducted countless interviews with local media outlets across the US and around the world.

Our humble little wordpress-based Stop Smart Meters! website has spawned dozens of other, allied groups around the world, and provided technical and scientific research that legitimize and empower campaigns to roll back and prevent deployments.   We are a grassroots movement seeking  to expose the truth about “smart grid” and re-instate local control in our communities.   We support legitimate legal efforts and awareness and pressure being brought to bear on public officials.  But likewise we also believe that the public already has the power to reject this monstrous, brutal corporate program.  We do not have to ask anyone’s permission or beg for our own privacy, safety, and health.  These are basic human rights.  At the end of the day, when it is necessary, we know that our willingness to disobey the “authorities” and take direct action that is protective of our communities is ultimately what will determine the outcome of this campaign we are engaged in.

Public action and PG&E's subsequent reaction revealed the utility industry's true nature.

Public action and PG&E’s subsequent reaction revealed the utility industry’s true nature.

It’s important to remember that California authorities and utilities wouldn’t have backed off their absurd “mandatory deployment plan” had it not been the direct pressure of communities organizing to have the foul devices removed and returned to the utility themselves.   The subsequent embarrassing Grinch-like disconnection of electro-sickened-kids-during-Christmas and the negative publicity and public ridicule that followed revealed the industry’s true colors and forced a (meager and inadequate) ‘opt out’ policy out of them.

We are not under some rose-tinted assumption that if we are successful and end up banning smart meters, that everything will be peachy.  The ‘smart’ grid emerged from a corrupt corporate culture that is responsible for countless crimes against nature and humanity.  Stopping smart meters would be equivalent to hacking away one branch of a tree- but it’s clear that as a movement, we need to hack away at the root of this evil, and when it has finally been stamped out, we need to plant a new kind of tree, together.

Stop Smart Meters! is not (ultimately) about the meter.  It’s about recognizing the connections between this one, unwelcome device forced on our homes and an entire worldview that threatens our lives and our species’ future on this planet.  It’s about acknowledging the severe health damage being done by wireless technology- not just the meters.  It’s about exposing and halting an overbearing, invasive spy program run by the government against the people.  It’s about focusing on the things that unite the political right and left, rather than the things they try to divide us with.   It’s about documenting the deterioration of democracy and empowering the public to demand it back.  It’s about questioning the utility services we have come to depend on and forging new community solutions to make these greedy corporations irrelevant.  Ultimately, it’s about discrediting and overcoming the mechanistic view of the world that treats humans and other living beings- even the Earth itself- as a commodity from which to extract profits.

An Analog Philosophy of Organizing

analog heartOur monthly bulletin, like our philosophy, is purely analog (at least as analog as you can get on a digital device).   We do not use graphics, photos, or other distractions that might impede those with dial-up connections from reading important updates about the movement.  We try to keep the website as simple as possible, because we know that the people who need it most are often in transitional or temporary housing where high-speed broadband isn’t always available.

Over the last year, Stop Smart Meters! has published exclusive news coverage  of the following issues- stories that would simply not be covered if it were not for our work.

2013 examples included:

When ‘Smart’ Meters Kill: The Story of Larry Nikkel — Details Emerge of Vacaville, CA Smart Meter Fire Death

PG&E Officers Kiraly and Burt, CPUC Planning & Policy Division Head Marzia Zafar Implicated in Smart Meter Spy Scandal

Stop Smart Meters! Sacramento Challenges SMUG SMUD

Family with Young Children Forced to Live in the Cold and Dark for Refusing a LADWP Smart Meter (Co-authored with EMF Safety Network)

In 2014, we have ambitious plans.   We’d like to:

  • Create new outreach materials to make it easy to start up your own campaign against the ‘smart’ grid wherever you live.
  • Eliminate illegal and extortionate ‘opt out’ fees for good and defend the rights of communities to refuse smart meter networks.
  • Continue to provide in-depth coverage and analysis of trends in technology and how they impact our human rights
  • Focus on ‘boots on the ground’ style campaigning, holding community meetings and conferences to rally the troops and provide timely, accurate information to activists
  • Forge alliances with activists in the San Francisco Bay Area and elsewhere who are fighting an out-of-control tech industry that is displacing low-income residents while drawing on the public purse

Please Do Not Donate to Stop Smart Meters!

If you do not have enough money for your basic needs- to pay for food, for your (skyrocketing) utility bill, or housing, DO NOT donate to Stop Smart Meters!  But if you find yourself instead in a position which allows you to share your funds, please contribute so we can continue our important work.  With the lack of functional regulatory agencies, it is up to grassroots activists to protect the public and publicize facts the industry would prefer to sweep under the rug.  That is our role and we take it very seriously.

Please contribute to help us make these things happen.  We simply cannot do it without your support.   While the smart grid industry (and most corporate non-profits) could burn through $100K in an afternoon without even blinking, far less than that amount would revolutionize our work and provide a budget for advertising and public outreach that would keep the smart grid advocates on the run.  To those who have already donated, we thank you sincerely.  If you appreciate this website and all we do to keep up the good fight, please support us and donate a little or a lot by the end of the year.  If you are interested in making a tax-deductible donation, please contact us for details. Thank you.

Precedent-Setting Smart Grid Verdict: Jury Awards Vermont Couple $1 mil for Microwave Taking of Their Mountaintop Home

Picture 3Some really nice, artistic people– Felix Kniazev and Olga Julinska lived peacefully on top of a green mountain in Vermont with their two children until their utility VELCO decided to build a massive communications tower on the mountain as part of the “smart grid.”  The family was forced to leave their home because of the radiation from the tower.  A jury in Rutland, VT on Friday awarded them $1 million in compensation for this ‘taking.’  This precedent-setting victory for the family is also a victory for the rest of us.

Like the brutal urban freeway building spree in the 1950’s and 60’s, today’s “smart grid” is a costly and invasive steam-roller funded by public money, harming communities and individuals. New towers emitting carcinogenic radiation are popping up all over in the name of being “green.”  Now juries are starting to award damages for wireless harm and takings even though levels of RF are below what the US guidelines consider safe.  That is not insignificant.  This is a serious public relations and legal blow not only to the toxic and invasive smart grid industry, but to a system of federal RF regulation that has become obsolete and is now under sustained attack.

The mountaintop in happier days before the new tower was constructed

Who would want this beast as a neighbor?

Two years ago, Felix Kniazev authored an opinion piece about the smart grid when their property was under threat, warning what the smart grid could do.   Now we are seeing the reality of that unfold.  They have not abandoned their home without a fight.  Occupy held a protest on the mountain before the tower was switched on, garnering support from politicians, and people of all political beliefs.  Change is in the air in Vermont, and across the country.

Restore the mountain to the Julinska/ Kniazev family!

Mountaintops everywhere- sacred to generations of humans- are being taken away from us for communications towers and the ‘smart grid.’ Restore the mountain to the Julinska/ Kniazev family!

‘Old Ironsides’ Provides a Secure Analog Meter Defense

'Old Ironsides' has protected this Sacramento home for the duration of SMUD's deployment

‘Old Ironsides’ has protected this Sacramento home for the duration of SMUD’s deployment

Forcible installations have led to an incredible array of defensive structures being built around analog meters to protect homes from the “smart” scourge.  We received the above photo of analog protection dubbed “Old Ironsides” from Eric Windheim, Director of Sacramento Smart Meter Awareness.  Definitely wins the prize for sturdiest defense we’ve  seen.

These photos below document the absurd lengths people are required to go to protect their own homes from the “deployment.”  They also capture the creativity and adaptability of ordinary people, and the strength of our communities to come up with solutions.

Maria Acosta of the Quebec-based anti-smart meter group Basses-Laurentide Refuse writes:

Here in Quebec we are keeping our analog meter by constructing a box around it or using other devices so that Hydro can take the reading but not change the meter in our absence.  Those that have locks use one without a key or fill the key hole with construction glue. The heads of the screws are flattened to avoid unscrewing them and screws are covered with construction glue.

It is the only way we can sleep tight and not worry that in a 15 minute absence our meter is changed.

Note screws have been filed to prevent removal

Maria continues:

“As soon as the first boxed analog meter was publicised, citizens started doing the same thing and asking how to make them.

Three citizens started to construct them, two for profit (one fair, the other barely covering expenses) and the third he charges you for the material and a contribution. He uses the money from the contribution to construct to citizens who cannot afford the 40 $.”

This analog meter is sure to stay warm and dry (and safe from theft) in its mini-cabin thanks to the efforts of resident Mr. J Roberge

There’s definitely some religious imagery here…

Who can resist a cuckoo clock analog?

You can read me, but you can’t get me!

Snug as a bug in a rug

No trespassing, Hydro Quebec!

Reports of Armed Intimidation and Trespassing in Nevada

picture-5Yesterday we received an unconfirmed report that Nevada Energy (NVE) trespassed on private property using armed agents, intimidating residents and refusing to leave when asked to do so.     This has become something of a pattern by the utilities- if the public won’t accept the smart grid voluntarily, they resort to threats of violence and armed intimidation (and in this case, infantile name calling.)  It seems that bullies everywhere have found gainful employment within the utilities’ ranks.  NVE is no stranger to these tacticsReports from Wyoming also suggest that corrupt police departments have been responsible for the intimidation of residents who resist “smart” meters.

These are our homes and we have a right to be safe in them.  If the police refuse to enforce trespassing laws against rogue utilities, then we have entered very dangerous territory indeed.

More details on this incident will be posted as they become available.  Following is a portion of the e-mail that we received yesterday from a Las Vegas resident:

“Yesterday, we received a visit from Edward Brooks and 4-5 armed thugs who refused to identify themselves. They were armed with handguns, tasers, and were sporting fake badges to make themselves appear as if they were sworn peace officers, which they are not! They stormed our property with NO phone call, NO notice of any kind, beating on my door, and demanding that we “Come outside to talk to NVE.” I went outside informed them that they were trespassing and that NVE’s “implied easement” is NOT a blanket policy for armed activity and attempts at intimidation on OUR property. I instructed them that they had conducted their business and to vacate my property immediately with their firearms which they refused to do. I repeated this demand no less than 6 times. They were on my property armed and refusing to comply with my demands to leave for no less than 30 minutes! Several had their hands resting on their pistols as if they intended to do something to me and one of these individuals even thought it professional to call me a “pussy” as he walked away. Apparently, this person does not know me….. AT ALL! I immediately called my attorney and one of my best friends who is a former LVMPD officer.”
