AN END OF YEAR MESSAGE FROM STOP SMART METERS!
We wish everyone out there a happy and healthy holiday season. Though
the fight against ‘smart’ meters this year has been stressful and scary at
times, the scale of the grassroots resistance that has come together in
the face of utility and government corruption has been truly
inspirational. There are now organized groups fighting “smart” meter
deployment in nearly every state in the United States, and an increasing
number of countries around the world. The movement against
privacy-invading, health-damaging, safety-risking “smart” meters has truly
gone global. Why not start a Stop Smart Meters! group in your
neighborhood today?
Here in California, where Stop Smart Meters! is based and where the
movement began last year, it has been a momentous year. While we are
truly sickened by the thousands and thousands of reports of smart meter
related health damage, overcharging, and safety violations, we do hold out
hope. A growing public awareness, ordinary people taking direct action to
protect their communities, a change in tone in media coverage, and
(limited) policy progress signals that the public has had enough of this
program and is now in open revolt.
A year ago, government and utility officials were insisting that the smart
meter program was mandatory, that no “opt outs” would be permitted, that
the radio transmitters emitted only “45 seconds per day” and that they are
weaker than most wireless consumer devices. Because of tireless advocacy,
research, direct action and publicity by all of us fighting the
‘deployment’ – we’ve made progress. Congressional reps confirm that the
smart grid program was never mandatory- that if anything smart meters
ought to be an ‘opt-in’ program according to law. Today California’s
largest utility –Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) has said that they will
allow customers the choice of an analog meter (though still at an
extortionate cost). We discovered through legal proceedings at the CA
Public Utilities Commission that the meters actually emit up to 190,000
pulses of microwave radiation every day- equivalent to having millions of
small cell phone towers scattered through our neighbourhoods blasting us
constantly. During a year in which the World Health Organization finally
came clean about the carcinogenic risks of electromagnetic fields, there
is no excuse why this technology is being used at all. Charging sickened
people- even a cent- to avoid a carcinogen not only violates the law, it
is totally bereft of morality. UTILITY SHAREHOLDERS must bear the cost of
cleaning up the mess they have made.
Our community stands strong against this violation and we bear witness to
the damage being inflicted on us using money from our own taxes and
utility bills. Our movement is getting stronger by the day as more people
wake up to the truth about this dangerous program. Utilities and the
government regulatory agencies that shield them are running for cover
everywhere.
We want to send a special shout out to those people who are suffering
effects from their ‘smart’ meters this holiday season, but who have not
put the pieces together and identified the cause- we know there must be
millions out there. Also, to those who have connected the dots but are
ignored by their utility and government- particularly those in multi-unit
dwellings and those on low income. We’re with you and we are here to
support and advise you.
Over the past year, Stop Smart Meters! has been at the forefront in this
fight. We’ve given hundreds of interviews to both alternative and
mainstream media, held several press conferences with those suffering from
‘smart meter sickness,’ organized a major town hall forum in Santa Cruz
with more than 200 attendees, and mobilized hundreds of people to speak at
the CPUC. The mainstream media’s dismal record of reporting this crisis
means that we must continue to cover events as they unfold ourselves. At
Stop Smart Meters! we continue to BE the media. All year long we have
kept StopSmartMeters.Org fresh with new articles by our panel of
contributors, our own original news coverage, videos, and analysis. We
have also travelled throughout California and out to Colorado to speak
publicly about the risks of ‘smart’ meter technology. Together with our
allies at the EMF Safety Network, we launched SmartMeterHelp.Com in
November to funnel the thousands of complaints to legislators and
Utilities Commissions. Our Director Josh Hart was even arrested twice this
year for blocking smart meter installations, as part of a long proud
tradition of peaceful civil disobedience in the face of injustice.
Last month, Stop Smart Meters! coordinated a press conference where Santa
Cruz, CA residents spoke out about why they were returning the unwanted
‘smart’ meter to PG&E, putting a face on ‘smart’ meter health concerns,
and igniting a media firestorm that put a much needed spotlight on the
crimes being perpetrated by the utilities and their lapdogs in state
regulatory agencies. PG&E panicked, disconnected power to the families
who had already been sickened by their stupid meters, creating a week-long
reporting frenzy of 75 year old ladies in tears and kids with smart meter
caused headaches having to forgo their Christmas. The utility was roundly
(and rightly) criticized by the media and policymakers, and hastily
retreated by the end of the week-their tail between their legs,
re-connecting the families with no meter at all, and finally attempting to
salvage the last shred of public respectability by offering the ability to
keep an analog meter (albeit at an extortionate rate).
All of this work is made possible by those who contribute their time and
money to the cause. We are as ever humbled by the generosity of people we
have never met, as well as our closest friends and allies, financially
contributing so that Stop Smart Meters! can continue to be a force to be
reckoned with. We know people are struggling in this tough economy, and

What YOU Can Do to Stop Smart Meters!
1. Lodge a formal complaint at the California State Public Utilities
Commission (PUC) Consumer Affairs Branch (or relevant agency in your
state) You can do this online:

your legislators, governor, utilities commission, etc and will allow us to
track complaints.
3. Send a letter to your utility via certified mail revoking permission
for them to install a “smart” meter on your home or business, or demanding

4. People concerned about their health have been having their ‘smart’

attack, organize local residents and demand that your local government

WHAT ARE SMART METERS!?
The installation of wireless gas, electric, and water meters is one of the
largest technology rollouts in history. Yet in California and other
states, there was virtually no consultation with the public and local
governments in advance of the multi-billion dollar “Advanced Metering
Infrastructure” (or AMI) project — the first ‘mandatory’ microwave
radiation device to be installed on our homes and businesses- far more
powerful than common household wireless devices. Wireless radiation is
a class 2B carcinogen according to the World Health Organization and
causes DNA damage at exposure levels far below FCC guidelines, in
peer-reviewed scientific studies. This radiation is not healthy for
anyone, but can be torture for the growing number of electrosensitive
people in our society. “Smart” meters pose health risks, violate
individual privacy, interfere with electronic appliances, increase carbon
emissions and overcharge customers. But utility companies and tech firms
love them because they allow them to layoff meter readers and generate

SMART METER CAMPAIGN UPDATES
UNWANTED SMART METERS GET RETURNED TO UTILITY IN SANTA CRUZ, CA
On Dec. 7th, more than a dozen Santa Cruz County residents- including
mothers and grandmothers- assembled outside Pacific Gas and Electric’s
Capitola Payment Center with their unwanted wireless electric meters in
hand, and spoke about what prompted them to defy their utility and replace
the ‘smart’ meter on their homes with widely available analog meters.
After being interviewed by the media, they quietly got in line and waited
for the next clerk. But before they could speak to anyone, PG&E called out
half a dozen Capitola Police Officers, and kicked everyone out of the
office. The unwanted ‘Smart’ Meters were left piled up on the counter.
PG&E (AKA the Grinch) in its infinite wisdom decided to disconnect power
to those who returned their ‘smart’ meters a week before Christmas,
including a family with small children who suffered headaches and
nosebleeds from their ‘smart’ meter and a 75 year old woman who depended

In a remarkable about-face in late September at a public meeting, the
president of the CPUC, Michael Peevey, told a man made ill by his “smart”
meter, “[PG&E] will provide that you can go back to the analog meter, if
that’s your choice.” PG&E has now declared that they intend to offer an
analog opt out- albeit at an exorbitant rate- it’s still not clear whether

What about our local law enforcement? Elected sheriffs all over the US
take an oath to protect the constitutional rights of the people in their
county. The relationship between sheriffs and the communities that elect
them is often much closer and more personal than any other in law
enforcement. Can we call on these officials for protection in this fight
for our health and safety?
In Mid-September at the Freedom Forum Meeting in Santa Cruz county, our
director Josh Hart spoke about the recall for the Santa Cruz County
sheriff, Phil Wowak, who refuses to enforce the County moratorium on

WIRELESS HEALTH DAMAGE IS NO JOKING MATTER
In late November we posted a photo of our neighbor in Scotts Valley, a man
we interviewed in September. He worked at a tech firm for ten years.
During that time, he kept his cell phone in his left back pocket–switched
on and sending signals. The other day he showed us his tumor that he says
he is 99% sure is from his cell phone. He also has a tumor on his left
ear–the side he used to speak on his phone. Wireless health damage is

SMART METERS ARE ILLEGAL: A NITTY-GRITTY ANALYSIS OF PEEVEY’S UNLAWFUL AND

We have been saying all along that this forced deployment of dangerous
“smart” meters is illegal, and that the recent proposed “opt-out” put
forward by CPUC President Michael Peevey is extortionate–we recently
posted a detailed analysis of just how far away President Peevey steps
from what he and his commission are actually allowed by Federal law and
Public Utilities Code to do. Peevey uses laws that should in fact protect
consumers and allow them choices–instead twisting them to protect the

SMART METERS BEING FUNDED BY THE US MILITARY?
Was the US Military involved in ‘smart’ meter R&D? New documents suggest
just that.
The utility companies have described their installation of ‘smart’ meters
as a “deployment.” They have called those of us peacefully defending the
safety and health of the public “insurgents.” At times, scenes of the
public physically blocking military-style smart meter installations
conjure up images of wartime. But is the smart meter program actually
being funded by the military? Is the “smart grid” somehow linked with
