2. What YOU Can Do to Stop Smart Meters!
a. Lodge a formal complaint at the California State Public Utilities Commission (PUC) Consumer Affairs Branch (or relevant agency in your state) You can do this online: https://ia.cpuc.ca.gov/cimsapp/?key=39949189
b. If you have suffered an injury or loss from a smart meter, submit a complaint at http://www.smartmeterhelp.com — this will go to your legislators, governor, utilities commission, etc and will allow us to track complaints for legal purposes.

d. 3. WHAT ARE SMART METERS!?
The so-called “smart grid” is perhaps the largest technology rollout in history. Yet there has been virtually no consultation with the public or local governments in advance of the multi-billion dollar “Advanced Metering Infrastructure” (or AMI) project. Smart meters emit up to 190,000 spikes of microwave radiation every day (that the WHO classifies as a Class 2B carcinogen[1])- and is far more powerful than common household wireless devices.[2] Wireless radiation causes DNA damage at exposure levels far below FCC guidelines, in peer-reviewed scientific studies[3]. This radiation is not healthy for anyone, and violates the human rights of the growing population of electrosensitive people in our society. “Smart” meters pose health risks, violate individual privacy, interfere with electronic appliances, increase carbon emissions and overcharge customers. But utility companies and tech firms love them because they allow them to layoff meter readers and generate more profit. Luckily, more communities every day are learning the facts and refusing the Digital Utility Meter (DUM) onslaught. FIGHTTHEFEES.ORG SENDS A MESSAGE TO UTILITIES: WE WON’T PAY Watsonville, CA mom Diane Dutton has had enough. “Something just doesn’t add up” she says. “We should not have to pay a fee to protect our health. There is enough science that says this is dangerous- I don’t want my family exposed to it.” So she set out to find others who are similarly alarmed about the smart meter situation and the extortionate opt out fees. The response so far has been very positive.
She says she set up FightTheFees.Org so that people don’t feel so alone when defying their utility. “There are thousands- millions of people opposed to the so-called smart grid- together we’re stronger than any utility company.” Diane encourages people to defend their analogs, and submit photos of themselves and their families holding a protest sign next to their meters to add to her website. A PRIMER ON FCC GUIDELINES FOR THE SMART METER AGE Why does your utility assert the smart meters they are installing are safe? In a sentence, they are protected by the very high limits the FCC has set for public exposure to radio-frequency (RF) radiation. The RF from smart meters doesn’t exceed those limits, they say, therefore you can’t be harmed by it. Leaving aside the fact that smart meter RF pulses may in fact exceed those limits, let’s look at the FCC “guidelines.” What follows may surprise even those who think they understand the matter…. SILVER SPRING NETWORKS IPO: PREDATORY CAPITALISM IN ACTION You can certainly blame your utility and state and federal regulatory agencies for those headaches—both real and figurative—since the smart meter went in. There’s no denying they deserve your criticism. But at the root of this international deployment are some very powerful corporations designing and supplying the diabolical devices and/or their components. One of the biggest firms pushing the wireless smart grid to utilities and governments around the world is Silver Spring Networks, based in the San Francisco Bay Area. PALO ALTO MUNICIPAL UTILITY DISTRICT REJECTS SMART METERS — WHICH MAKES FIFTY LOCAL GOVERNMENTS IN CALIFORNIA WHO SAY NO One more reason why it pays to have local–not corporate–control over essential public services. In February, after receiving testimony from those injured by smart meter radiation and hearing widespread reports of fires, health damage, privacy invasions and overcharges, the City of Palo Alto (adjacent to Stanford University and a center of Silicon Valley commerce) declared that no smart meters would be installed until 2015 at the earliest. This is surely a black eye to the Electric Power Research Institute based in the City, who will retain an analog meter on their offices, even as they promote the toxic technology for others. METERS THAT ENDANGER: SHOCKING DETAILS FROM A WHISTLEBLOWER Are smart meters just too complex? Are they veritable blackboxes (well, beige) of assorted electronic components, jury-rigged and thrown together in an off-shore factory, and then slapped onto houses without proper safety testing? SANTA CRUZ COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT ISSUES SCATHING REPORT ON SM SAFETY Santa Cruz County, California–birthplace of Stop Smart Meters! and epicenter of a steady stream of both political and direct action in the battle against smart meters–remains on the front lines. There are different systems and companies, but as with electric and gas ‘smart’ meters, they broadcast your usage data wirelessly, permeating your home with radio-frequency radiation and compromising your privacy.
